It derives from volpe = "fox", and is related to the concept of cunning, slyness and speed typical of the fox. Volpin is a surname typical of Padua, Volpini of central Italy, Volpe prevails in the South, Volpi is typical of northern Italy. Volpino, Vulpetti and Volpon are very rare forms.
