Surname Verlato
Origin and meaning
According to E. Rossoni, the surname Verlato presents several possible interpretations. It could derive from a form of Venetan origin that indicates provenance from Villaverla (province of Vicenza), which would link it with a toponymic origin. He also considers a possible relation with the place name Verla (Trentino). On the other hand, he does not rule out an alternative interpretation from the Venetan dialectal term vèrla, which designates a type of snake, which would imply a nickname origin.
For his part, F. De Laurentiis defines it as a Trentino surname formed directly from the place name Verla (TN), thus reinforcing the hypothesis of a geographical origin linked to the family's place of provenance.
