The authors agree that this is a surname of Sicilian and dialectal origin, derived from the term stazzuni or stazzùni, which designates the place where objects of terracotta were made, such as jars and plates, as well as tiles or bricks.

F. Miranda broadens the sense of the term drawing on the Sicilian Vocabulary of Piccitto: besides the ceramic workshop, stazzuni can refer to the place of extraction of clay or to the kiln where lime is fired. Miranda notes that the surname is diffused in around fifty municipalities, for the most part Sicilian, with a concentrated presence in the provinces of Messina and Enna —in localities such as Nicosia, Cerami, Nissoria, Valguarnera Caropepe, Regalbuto and Troina— and with a very occasional presence in other regions of Italy: Piedmont, Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, Liguria, Tuscany, Lombardy, Veneto and Molise.

V. Blunda adds a hypothesis on the origin of the surname: it could have arisen from a microtoponym applied to a person who lived next to a pottery workshop or who devoted themselves to that trade, which would link it both to the geography of the place and to the traditional craft activity in Sicily.
