The surname Sgrignieri: history, documents and an unexpected transformation

The surname Sgrignieri is one of the most singular cases documented in the local history of San Marco Argentano, in the province of Cosenza, Calabria. It is not a diffused Italian surname or one with a consolidated tradition, but a family name that appears in the registers during the 19th century, whose origin is intimately linked to writing errors, graphic confusions and difficulties proper to the oral transmission of the Calabrian dialect in the period prior to the standardization of Italian.

The first known records date from 1809, when the muleteer Antonio Sgrignieri declared the birth of his son. He lived in Santo Petruzzo street together with his wife, Elisabetta Rummolo. In those same years there also appears his brother Michele Sgrignieri, born in Luzzi, an agricultural worker, who married in San Marco in 1815; two of his children contracted marriage in the same locality. Although these family lines seem to be interrupted, towards 1885 a new record arises: another Michele, this time a shoemaker, born in San Marco and son of Antonio and Rosa Carnevale, declared the birth of his children Napoleone (1885) and Presentina (1886). These two children represent the last documented presence of the surname Sgrignieri in San Marco Argentano.

The studies carried out by the Municipality of San Marco Argentano, published within the historical project L'Ottocento dietro l'angolo, allow a better understanding of the formation of this and other "unusual" surnames. Within the series dedicated to the "cognomi sbagliati" (mistaken surnames), it is analyzed how, during the 19th century, the combination of local dialects, unclear pronunciations and limited literacy generated numerous errors in the civil registers. The registry officials, obliged to interpret oral declarations and transfer them to written Italian, usually resorted to abbreviations and phonetic reconstructions that did not always coincide with the real surname.

In that context, the local researchers consider that Sgrignieri is not an original surname, but the result of a misreading of the surname San Gregorio (Sangregorio). In the old documents, this surname appeared abbreviated as S.Gregorio or written in dialect form as S.Griguorio. The handwritten spelling of the time favoured confusions: the u could look like an n and the o could be confused with an e. From this combination arose the mistaken reading S.Grigneri, which ended up transforming into Sgrignieri within the local registers.

The surname, therefore, has no etymological root of its own. The alternative attributions —such as a possible relation with "digrignare," "ghigno" or "crine"— are mentioned in the studies only as hypotheses discarded in the face of the documentary evidence. The most solid explanation is the involuntary deformation of the name San Gregorio, the product of the crossing between abbreviations, hurried writing and linguistic difficulties typical of pre-unification Calabria.

Taken together, the history of Sgrignieri constitutes a valuable example for understanding how many Italian surnames were born and disappeared in the south of the peninsula: not always as the result of an old family tradition, but sometimes as the consequence of simple writing errors that, once registered, acquired the solidity of a legal surname.
