Surname Settembre

Origin and meaning

The authors agree that this surname derives from the name of the month Settembre (September), attributed in the past to children born in that month. E. De Felice notes that the surname is rare and sporadic in Italy in general, with a greater presence in the Naples area.

E. Rossoni specifies the geographic distribution and adds a nuance of origin: he places it in Naples, San Paolo Bel Sito, Nola and Palma Campania in the Naples area; in Castel San Giorgio and Bracigliano in the Salerno area; and in Domicella in the Avellino area. Rossoni proposes that it would have been a surname assigned specifically to children abandoned during the month of September, a habitual practice in the registers of foundlings of the region of Campania.
