E. Rossoni notes that this surname is very rare and seems specific to the Rieti area, in the area comprised between Collevecchio and Magliano Sabina.

Blunda proposes a different etymology and of Sicilian origin: the surname would come from the dialect word scùcchiu, which in ordinary Sicilian speech designates the "odd" or "unpaired," that is, that which is left without a pair. As a surname, it would have arisen from a nickname applied to a solitary person or to the only child without siblings.
