Surname Sacchetti
Origin and meaning
E. Rossoni and F. De Laurentiis agree that the surname is linked to the Sacchi group.
De Laurentiis records it as derived from Sacchi.
Rossoni suggests that these surnames may have different origins: augmentative forms or forms derived from the suppression of the first syllable of the name Isacco —documented in 1300 in Florence with Saccone Tarlati—; nicknames related to the trade of sack maker; or the trade of loader.
Rossoni distinguishes the variants and their geographic distribution: Sacchetti is present in the centre-north of Italy; Sacchi has an important zone in the area comprising the provinces of Alessandria, Pavia, Milan, Novara, Varese and Lecco, another in the Mantua and Modena areas, with significant presences throughout the centre-north. Rossoni also specifies the other forms: Sacchinelli, very infrequent, would seem to have a small zone in the Vibo Valentia area; Sacchini has zones in Genoa, in the Apennine of the Parma and Reggio Emilia areas, in the area comprising Tuscany, Romagna and the Pesaro area, between the Piceno area and that of Teramo, and in Rome; Sacchino is practically unique; Sacco is diffused throughout Italy.
Rossoni adds the final variants: Saccon is decidedly of Veneto, of the Treviso area —in San Vendemiano, San Fior, Conegliano, Susegana, Fontanelle, Codognè and Mareno di Piave— and of the Venice area —in Mirano, Venice, Mira, Santa Maria di Sala and Spinea. Saccone has a zone in the Ligurian Ponente, in Rome, in Campania, in the Foggia area and in south-eastern Sicily. Sacconi, besides a small zone in the Padua area, has another in the Florence, Arezzo, Siena and Perugia areas, and another in the Viterbo and Rome areas.
💡 The surname Sacchetti also appears as altered form of the surname Sacchi in other studies consulted in this project.
