F. De Laurentiis and E. Rossoni agree that the surname was formed from the place name Reggio Emilia.

De Laurentiis adds that it also derives from the corresponding demonym, Reggiano, and that it is diffused in the north up to Tuscany, with its epicentre and greatest frequency in Emilia and especially in Bologna.

Rossoni identifies it as typical of Emilia.
