A. Bongioanni and E. Rossoni agree that the surname may derive from the name of Hebrew origin Rebecca, although both also note other possible etymologies.

Bongioanni identifies it as a Hebrew feminine given name, possibly from the Hebrew Ribqah, the equivalent of "net" in a figurative sense, although the etymology is doubtful. He notes that it was little used by Christians: in fact, Rebecca and Isacchette are used in some places by the people to indicate the children of Israel.

Bongioanni comments that some wished to derive from Rebecca the name of an old and celebrated inn of Milan, the Rebecchino, but he considers that etymology very doubtful. He adds that the surname Robecchi, derived from the place name Robecco, is frequent in Lombardy. Otto Cima, an authority on the evocation of old Milanese memories, believes that the name comes from ribeca or ribechino, a popular musical instrument.

Rossoni suggests that they could derive from the name of Hebrew origin Rebecca, or from place names such as Rebecco di Guidizzolo (Mantua area) or from old localities. He documents it in Genoa in the 16th century with the notary Andrea Rebecco. He adds that Rebecchi mainly reflects the place name Rebecco, a term of the military defensive system that designates a counter-redoubt.
