De Laurentiis agree, noting that it is an abbreviated or derived form of more complex names such as Hildeprand, Rotprando or Liutprand, diffused in the Frankish and Lombard tradition.

E. Rossoni further documents its use already in the high-medieval period, while F. De Laurentiis links it with the form Prando related to Brando, associated with the meaning of "sword." In this way, the surname reflects the evolution of Germanic names in Italy, later fixed as hereditary surnames.
