Origin and meaning

E. Rossoni and F. De Laurentiis differ on the origin of the surname.

Rossoni derives it from semi-dialectal contractions of abbreviated or affectionate forms of the Latin name Paullus, which evolves first into Paullinus or Paollinus and then contracts into Pullinus and Pollinus.

De Laurentiis, on the other hand, derives it from the name Apollonio (Pollonio), diffused in Rome by Greeks and by Greek culture, derived in turn from Apollon, the name of the god Apollo of Greco-Roman mythology.
