Surname Pizzorno

Origin and meaning

Pizzorni is a surname typical of Alessandria and Genoa. Pizzorno is a surname characteristic of the provinces of Alessandria, Savona and Genoa.

It could be a toponymic surname, derived from Pizzorno, a locality of Isola Santa in the upper area of Lucca Garfagnana, or also from the name of Pizzorne, a frazione of Villa Basilica, also in the Lucca area. The plateau of Pizzorne is a mountainous zone located in the province of Lucca, commonly called by the inhabitants of the area Pizzorna. Monte Pizzorno is one of the highest in the zone.

But, according to E. Rossoni, the most probable origin is from the old Germanic name Pietzhorn.

The Pizzorno, in the second half of the 1600s, were a family of iron entrepreneurs of Rossoglione, Genoa.
