E. Rossoni specifies that it could derive from the place name Piazzolla di Nola, in the Naples area, or from the name of areas crossed by the Piazzolla torrent in Campania. He mentions as a figure of note Marino Piazzolla, of San Ferdinando di Puglia (1910–1985), an important representative of the religious poetry of 20th-century Apulia.
