E. Rossoni and N. Bergamo agree on the Greek origin of the surname, although with different interpretations.

E. Rossoni derives it from the Italianization of the Greek surname, especially Cretan, Perounakis or Pirounakis.

N. Bergamo interprets it from the Greek term perone, with the meaning of "little stick."

Variants

Geographic distribution: Peronace, very rare, is Calabrian, with tiny presences in Stignano and Camini in the Reggio Calabria area, and in Catanzaro, Santa Caterina dello Ionio and Guardavalle in the Catanzaro area. Peronaci, almost unique, is from the Catanzaro area.
