Origin and meaning

F. De Laurentiis and E. Rossoni agree that the surname is a derivative of the name Pietro, formed from dialectal modifications.

F. De Laurentiis adds that in some cases it has as its base the place name Pederzano, in the province of Trento.

E. Rossoni documents its transformation into a surname in a deed of 1498 in Bergamo with the cleric Baldassarre Peterzani, and in Val Brembana in 1668 with the vicar Marcus Peterzanus. He mentions as a notable figure the painter from the Bergamo area Simone Peterzano (1540–1596), a pupil of Titian, in whose workshop Caravaggio learned the art of painting.
