Surname Pascutti
Origin and meaning
E. De Stefani notes that this surname comes from an older form, Pasculutti, from which the present spelling derives by syncope. The base is the Friulian personal name Paschâl, given to a son born during the Easter period, with a Christian etymology going back to the Hebrew passah through the Latin pascha. De Stefani does not rule out either that, by interpreting names such as Pascul or Paschìn as compounds of the root Pasc– plus a suffix, the variant ending in –ùt was generated by extension. In time this designation became a surname. Its presence is concentrated in Mortegliano and, sporadically, in the Udine area, including the city itself and the localities of Rigolato, in Carnia, the mountainous region of northern Friuli.
E. Rossoni agrees on the typically Friulian character of the surname and adds that the suffix -utti functions in Friuli as a patronymic form equivalent to “son of,” alluding to ancestors whose father bore the name Pasqua. For his part, F. De Laurentiis places it in northeastern Italy, in the regions of Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trentino-Alto Adige, likewise deriving it from Pasqua.
💡 The surname Pascutti also appears as altered form of the surname Pasqua in other studies consulted in this project.
