The authors agree that this surname is of Friulian origin, with a documented presence in Verzegnis and Tolmezzo, in the Udine area.

E. De Stefani proposes an etymology going back to the Hebrew passah, literally “passage” or “crossing,” the term by which the Jews commemorated the departure from Egypt. From the Latin pascha, crossed with pascua (“pastures”), the form paschua arose. From this base derive the Friulian personal names Paschâl (masculine) and Pasche (feminine), with variants such as Pascul, Pascolàn and Pascùt, given to children born during the Easter period, which in time became a surname. De Stefani notes that the surname has been rooted for centuries in Verzegnis —particularly in the locality of Intissans— and in Tolmezzo, both in Carnia, the mountainous zone of northern Friuli, in the province of Udine. He also indicates a presence in other areas of northeastern Italy and of Emilia-Romagna.

E. Rossoni, on the other hand, proposes that the surname would derive from the name Paschinus, an archaic form of Pasquinus.
