The authors agree in noting a Greek origin for this surname. E. Rossoni specifies that it would derive from the name of the Greek island of Naxos, and places it as a southern surname of mainly Calabrian rootedness, with a presence in the Reggio Calabria area —in localities such as Polistena, Taurianova, Cittanova, Rosarno and Melicucco—.
P. Durante agrees in pointing to a Greek island as the point of departure, although without specifying which, leaving the exact identification of the place name of origin open.
