The surname Mozzon is held to be linked to older and shorter forms such as Moz / Moc, documented in the area of the Natisone Valleys, in the present-day region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, an area historically marked by linguistic and cultural contact between Italy and Slovenia. These forms appear in parish registers from at least the 17th century, particularly in baptism and death records of the parish of San Pietro al Natisone, as well as in nearby localities such as Pulfero and Erbezzo.

The information comes from the project "I cognomi delle Valli del Natisone", a study developed by B. Zuanella and published between 2006 and 2009 with his authorization on the cultural site Lintver.it, managed by the Associazione Culturale Lintver. The study is based on the systematic analysis of parish registers of the 16th to 19th centuries (baptisms, marriages and deaths) and offers a detailed reconstruction of the etymological, geographical and historical origin of the traditional surnames of this border region.

In this context, Moz / Moc is noted as a surname of uncertain etymological origin, but probably related to surnames of Romance root such as Mozzi and Mozzon, present also in other areas of Friuli. The study stresses that, between 1420 and 1797, the territory was under the influence of the Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia, with the presence of officials coming from Friuli and Veneto at border crossings such as Stupizza and at the customs post of Pulfero. This situation favoured linguistic interferences, lexical borrowings and onomastic adaptations, visible in many local surnames.

The project further stresses that the surnames of the Natisone Valleys frequently present hybrid roots, combining Friulian and Slovene elements, as well as Romance, Germanic and local influences. Surnames derived from given names, bynames, trades, place names and demonyms are common, as is the use of patronymic suffixes characteristic of Slovene (-ič, -ac, -on, -ar, -ščak, among others). In this framework, Mozzon may be interpreted as a patronymic evolution or extension of older forms such as Moz / Moc, later stabilized as a hereditary surname.
