Miranda specifies that muschitta is an altered diminutive of that term and that in Sicilian dialect it designates the mosquito. V. Blunda records the dialect form muschìtta with the same meaning and proposes that the nickname could have been applied to a person of annoying character, shrill voice or slight build. E. Rossoni and Miranda agree in noting that nicknames of this kind alluded to physical or character traits of the founder of the line.

Rossoni and Miranda also note the possibility of a toponymic origin, linked to localities such as Monte Moschitta, in the Catania area —Miranda places this locality in the area of Monte Santo Mauro of Caltagirone—. As for the geographical distribution, the authors agree that the surname is proper to Sicily. Miranda specifies its presence in the provinces of Catania, Agrigento, Palermo and Messina, and mentions the comune of Regalbuto in the Enna area. Rossoni adds that the variant Moschitto would appear to originate at Augusta, in the Syracuse area. Miranda also records lesser cores in Calabria, Tuscany, Lombardy, Piedmont, Lazio, Umbria and Veneto.
