Surname Mora
Origin and meaning
This is the fixing as a surname of the name and nickname Moro, already common in the Middle Ages. Moro continues in part the Late Latin personal name Maurus, "inhabitant or native of Mauretania, of North Africa", but also, in a figurative sense, "of very dark skin or complexion". In the Middle Ages it further took on the new meaning of "Saracen", that is, one belonging to the Muslim populations of the Mediterranean. In some cases it may also reflect the place name Mora (Perugia).
💡 The surname Mora also appears as variant of the surname Morello in other studies consulted in this project.
