De Laurentiis notes that the surname derives from the term "mountain" and is very frequent in Emilia-Romagna, where it arose to designate people coming from mountainous areas or possessing characteristics proper to the inhabitants of the mountains. P. Canè agrees on the descriptive origin of the term, interpreting it as a demonym indicating provenance from mountain areas.
