Rossoni notes that Miccoli would be native to the Salento peninsula —that is, the southernmost zone of the region of Puglia, in southern Italy—, while the variant Miccolis, also of Puglia, appears to be proper to the Bari area. According to Rossoni, both forms derive from variations of the reduced form of the name Domenico: Menico › Micco. F. De Laurentiis agrees in pointing to Menico as the underlying etymon.
