Surname Matteotti

Origin and meaning

E. Rossoni notes that this surname is typical of Trentino, with a presence especially at Dro, Riva del Garda, Arco and Trento. According to Rossoni, it would derive from the medieval name Matheotus, used with particular frequency in that region, although it could also be read as a patronymic form from the name Matteo, that is, the name of the father of the founder of the line.

F. De Laurentiis, for his part, proposes a derivation from the surname Mattei, without developing the point in further detail.

💡 The surname Matteotti also appears as altered form of the surname Mattei in other studies consulted in this project.
