Surname Martucci
Origin and meaning
E. Rossoni notes that this surname would derive from the medieval name Martucius, documented in a deed of 1280 in the Registers of the Angevin Chancery of Naples. Its geographical distribution covers central and southern Italy, with a presence in Lazio, Campania, Molise, Puglia and Calabria. The variant Martuccio appears to be proper to Colle Sannita, in the Benevento area.
F. De Laurentiis proposes, by contrast, that the surname would be a variant of Martini, shortened from Martinucci, which would link it to the Latin name Martinus and hence to the cult of Saint Martin of Tours.
💡 The surname Martucci also appears as altered form of the surname Marta in other studies consulted in this project.
