Brondolo adds a geographic dimension, observing that in the canton of Ticino (Switzerland) and in the area of Lombardy, the surname identifies families originating from the Monferrato — a historical territory of Piedmont — with the form deriving from the dialect term munfréin-.

It is also recorded that the surname ultimately traces back to the Lombard given name Manfredo, of Germanic origin, composed of the elements magin, meaning "power," and frithu, meaning "peace" or "friendship."
