Origin and meaning
The surname is recorded in the municipal territory of Santa Maria la Longa, in Friuli, and is documented between 1403 and 1413. The earliest attestation reads Çuan filg Lucha di Clauglan (that is, Clauiano). Later records include, in 1538, Jacomuzo de dar per suo fijol Zuan Lucha, at Santa Maria la Longa; in 1570, Pietro Luca, at Palmanova; and in 1744, Antonio Luca, at Passariano di Lauzacco.
The surname comes from the personal name Luca —in medieval Friulian also Luch—, subsequently Italianized as Lucca, with a double -c- that is not original and arose from confusion with the celebrated city of Tuscany.
