The authors agree that this surname derives from the place name Lodi —a city of Lombardy— and from its associated demonyms, lodigiano and, in regional form, lodesano.

De Felice notes that the surname may be linked both to Lodi and to Lodi Vecchio, both localities in the Milan area, and that its distribution covers mainly Lombardy, with a high frequency in Milan, as well as a presence in Emilia and Liguria. F. De Laurentiis agrees on that geographical profile without adding new data.

E. Rossoni specifies that the surname shows at least two independent clusters of origin: one in the Lodi and Milan area, and another in the area of the provinces of Ravenna, Bologna, Modena, Mantua, Reggio Emilia and Cremona. Rossoni further mentions the surname Lodigiani, proper to the provinces of Milan, Pavia, Lodi and Cremona, and likewise links it to the place name Lodi and to its demonym.
