Surname Lochis
Origin and meaning
The surname is held to derive from the Greek leukós, meaning "light, bright". It is associated with the Sebino, the lake district around Lake Iseo, in the region of Lombardy.
E. Rossoni notes that the surname is very rare and appears specific to the Bergamo area. Rossoni also stresses that the Lochis family belonged to the nobility of Bergamo with the rank of counts, and that in the middle of the 19th century Guglielmo Lochis served as podestà —an office equivalent to that of mayor— in Bergamo.
