The consulted works concur in identifying Lo Bianco as a surname typical of Calabria and Sicily, with a particularly strong presence in the area of Palermo. It is also recorded as concentrated in the province of Vibo Valentia in Calabria.

E. Rossoni notes that the variant Lobianco, absolutely rare, is probably due to transcription errors. He also documents the transformation into a surname through a deed of the Holy Inquisition dated January 25, 1516, in Messina, in which a certain Antonino Lo Bianco appears.

F. Miranda offers the most detailed etymological explanation: the surname derives from the Germanic blank, meaning "gleaming, shining white," the term from which the Italian bianco comes and which displaced the Latin albus as the common word for the color white. According to Miranda, Lo Bianco originated as a byname linked to the color of the first bearer's hair, beard, or skin, before becoming a given name and finally a surname, carrying the sense of "the white one" or "that (son) of the Bianco." Rossoni adds that such nicknames could also refer to characteristics of the bearer's place of dwelling.
