The authors agree that the surname derives from the place name Librizzi, a locality of the metropolitan city of Messina, in Sicily, regarded as the probable place of origin of the first bearers of the surname.

E. Rossoni notes that the surname has two independent clusters of origin (ceppi): a main one in Sicily, in the Messina area, and a secondary one in the north, in the Brescia area.

F. Miranda develops the etymology of the place name and proposes a Greek derivation: the term Brikinniai —mentioned by Thucydides— designated fortresses and advanced defensive positions. Its inhabitants were called Lu-Brichios, a form that evolved into Lu-Brizzi. With later Latin influence Li-Vir arose ("the warrior or strong men"), from which Livrizzi derived; even today the local speech uses Lubrizzi or the contracted form Lurizzi. From the confluence of the Latin li-vir and the Greek lu-brichios ("the guardian warriors") the present form of the surname resulted.

Miranda also broadens the geographical distribution: besides the main core in Sicily —with a presence in the Palermo, Catania, Messina, Caltanissetta, Enna and Agrigento areas— and the secondary core in the Brescia area, he records families attested in Tuscany, Piedmont, Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto and Puglia.
