Surname Laurenti
Origin and meaning
The authors agree that this surname derives from the Latin cognomen Laurentius, itself linked to the ancient place name Laurentum, a city of western Lazio, possibly identified with Lavinium.
F. De Laurentiis stresses that the surname spread especially in Lazio, and that its currency was sustained by the cult of Saint Lawrence, martyred in Rome in the year 258. He further notes that it coexisted with Latinizing forms such as Laurezio and Laurentio.
E. Rossoni offers a broader geographical distribution: he places the origin of Laurenti in Umbria and Lazio, with a presence in northern Italy from Piedmont to Veneto. The variant Laurenzi would be typical of the strip covering the Arezzo area, Umbria, the Marche, Abruzzo and Lazio. The variant Laurenzio, by contrast, appears as specific to Carema, in the Turin area.
💡 The surname Laurenti also appears as altered form of the surname Lorenzo in other studies consulted in this project.
