The authors agree that this surname is of toponymic origin, derived from Landriano, a locality in the province of Pavia. E. Rossoni notes that this was a Milanese family documented from the 12th century.

As recorded by Surnames in Italy, the place name Landriano would appear to go back to a predial place name, although no precise identification has been established. The Landriani were a noble Milanese family who appear in documents of the municipality of Milan from 1115 as consuls of justice, and until 1216 as consuls of the town council. Among its members, Guido Landriani stands out, who took part in the peace of 1183 signed at Piacenza between the emperor Frederick Barbarossa and the representatives of the Lombard League.
