The authors agree that the surname derives from the Germanic given name Lamberto (in its older form Landoberht), whose meaning is read as "famous (berhta) in the people or territory (landa)".

F. De Laurentiis adds that this name belongs to the Frankish tradition, was spread in Italy by the Lombards and is documented from the end of the 8th century, although it became frequent only from the 10th. He notes that the surname is found in the north, with the greatest presence in Emilia-Romagna, as well as in central Italy and in the Naples area.

P. Canè indicates, more briefly, that this is a patronymic surname, formed from the name Lambert, of Germanic origin, with the sense of "famous in the territory".
