Gelso / Gelsi

Gelso and Gelsi are Italian surnames that, despite their formal similarity, could have different origins according to the variant and the geographical area of provenance.

Gelso is a surname characteristic of Sicily. According to some interpretations, it derives from the dialectal word cèrzu, meaning "uncultivated land" or "wasteland", and would have arisen as an agro-toponymic nickname or a microtoponym applied to one who owned, inhabited or worked a plot of those characteristics. In this case, the surname would not be related to the Italian gelso ("mulberry tree"), but to a dialectal denomination linked to the rural landscape.

Gelsi, on the other hand, is a surname typical of northern Italy and belongs to the group of surnames linked to the Italian term gelso ("mulberry tree") and to its plural gelsi ("mulberry trees"). Its most probable etymology relates it to the cultivation of this tree and to sericulture, an activity of great economic importance in regions such as Lombardy, Friuli and Veneto, where the mulberry leaves constituted the exclusive food of the silkworm. As a surname, it could have originated as an occupational nickname applied to a cultivator of mulberry trees or as a toponymic surname referring to one who resided near lands characterised by the presence of these trees.

A possible derivation of Gelsi from medieval personal names such as Gelso or Gelsomino, occasionally used as auspicious given names, has also been suggested.

The geographical distribution of both forms seems to support these interpretations: Gelso is concentrated mainly in Sicily, while Gelsi presents a predominantly northern diffusion, especially in areas historically linked to sericulture. Since Gelsi does not figure as an autonomous entry in the main Italian onomastic repertoires consulted, the proposed etymologies must be considered indicative.
