Surname Gardella
Origin and meaning
The authors agree that the surname derives from the Provençal name Gardel, also used in the Pyrenean region of France, or from its Latinization Gardelius, or directly from the French surname Gardel.
E. Rossoni notes that Gardella has its main zone of presence in the Genoa area, with extension towards the Alessandria, Pavia, Piacenza and Parma areas, and also in the Ravenna and Forlì areas. The variant Gardelli, less frequent, is concentrated in the Parma area and in the area covering the Bologna, Ravenna and Cesena areas. Gardello is practically unique.
P. Regati agrees in noting the Genoa area as the main nucleus of the surname, with particular presence in the locality of Sori, and mentions as a historical reference the well-known Caffè Gardella of that city.
