Galantini attests to its presence in the 17th century in Atri and Ornano di Colledara, and in the 18th century in Civitella del Tronto and Nereto; he also records the spelling Ferrone in Mosciano Sant'Angelo and in Villa Risteccio of Civitella del Tronto.
