Surname Ferroni
Origin and meaning
F. De Laurentiis considers that this surname derives from Ferri.
S. Galantini offers a wider perspective: the surname, spread mainly in the centre and north of Italy, has as its base names formed from nicknames and trade names derived from the Latin ferrum, "iron", already documented and frequent in the Middle Ages with the meaning of "the one who works iron". Galantini attests to its presence in the 17th century in Atri and Ornano di Colledara, and in the 18th century in Civitella del Tronto and Nereto; he also records the spelling Ferrone in Mosciano Sant'Angelo and in Villa Risteccio of Civitella del Tronto.
💡 The surname Ferroni also appears as variants of the surnames Ferrari and Ferro in other studies consulted in this project.
