F. De Laurentiis notes that the surname has as its base nicknames and trade names linked to the faraone, birds of dark plumage with whitish or grey spots edged in black, peculiar to the domestic species, capable of taking flight in the face of danger, and which were raised together with the other farmyard animals.

S. Galantini proposes, at least for the presence of the surname in Abruzzo, a toponymic origin: Faraone, a frazione locality of Sant'Egidio alla Vibrata, whose name would derive from the Lombard term fara, meaning "generation, lineage". This origin would explain the wide diffusion of the surname during the 18th century in the area of the river Vibrata, especially in Colonnella and in Ancarano.
