G. Rohlfs notes that it is a surname of Greek-Byzantine origin, present in the province of Catanzaro —including the city itself and localities such as Cotronei, Squillace, Santa Severina and the Cutro area— and in the province of Cosenza, specifically in Cariati. Rohlfs indicates that the surname coincides with the name of a contrada near Botricello and links it with the surname Faraò. In Argentina, the surname may lose the graphic accent and appear as Farago.

P. Durante specifies the Greek etymology: it would derive from the term kharakóo, meaning "driver of stakes".
