The authors differ as to the origin of the surname. E. Rossoni considers that it would derive from a Ladin dialectal nickname meaning "spring" or "fountain", and places it as typical of the Belluno area, in particular of the localities of Lamon and Arsiè, as well as of Feltre and Fonzaso, all in the Veneto.

F. De Laurentiis, on the other hand, proposes that the base of the surname would be a nickname or trade name derived from the expression "makes gold", referring to the one who turns to gold everything he touches or to the one who worked gold as a trade.
