It has as its base the augural and gratulatory name Dólce (documented from the early Middle Ages in the forms Dulcis and Dulcissimus, and later Dulcia and Dolcia for the feminine, and also in compounds such as Dolceamore, Dolcebene, Dolcebuonus, Dolcemagno), given to a child of whom it is augured that he be "sweet", good and affectionate, or who is for the parents "sweet", pleasing, a source of joy and consolation, according to E. De Felice.
