Surname Di Giunta
Origin and meaning
The authors agree that this surname has a patronymic character: it derives from the name of the father of the first bearer, Bonaggiunta, reduced by aphaeresis to Giunta. Both note as zones of reference the Enna area —especially Leonforte— and the Catania area, in Sicily.
F. Miranda broadens this analysis and indicates that, in Sicilian dialect, ggiunta —more correctly iùnta— means "addition" or "that which is added to a thing", which opens a second interpretative line: the surname could also mean "added, helper or relative", according to the proposal of Pensabene. Miranda also specifies the geographical distribution of the surname, present in Sicily in the provinces of Catania, Palermo, Messina and Enna, with localities such as Troina, Regalbuto, Taormina and Giardini Naxos, and with specific presence also in Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany and Lazio.
