Surname Di Benedetto

Origin and meaning

The authors agree that the surname Di Benedetto is of patronymic origin: it derives from the given name Benedetto, which would have been the name of the father or founding ancestor of each family line.

F. De Laurentiis adds that the name Benedetto was already consolidated from the beginnings of the Middle Ages, driven by the prestige and the cult of Saint Benedict of Nursia. This name continues the personal name of augural character, Latin Benedictus, peculiar to Christian spheres, derived from the verb benedicere, with the sense of "consecrated" or "blessed [by God]".

E. Rossoni notes that the variant Di Benedetto is distributed throughout Italy with the exception of Sardinia, while the form Dibenedetto presents more specific zones of concentration: in the region of Puglia, especially in the Bari area —with presence in Barletta, Altamura and Gravina in Puglia—, and in Sicily, particularly in Monterosso Almo, Caltanissetta and Syracuse.

💡 The surname Di Benedetto also appears as variant of the surname Benedetti in other studies consulted in this project.
