The personal name Marco became extremely popular throughout medieval Italy thanks to the cult of Saint Mark the Evangelist, disciple of Saint Peter and author of the second canonical Gospel.

E. Rossoni notes that the surname achieved particular prominence in the Veneto region due to the strong devotion to Saint Mark. After the transfer of the saint’s relics from Alexandria to Venice in the 9th century, Saint Mark became the patron saint of Venice, and the famous Basilica di San Marco was dedicated to him.

E. Rossoni records De Marchi mainly in northern Italy, especially in Veneto, with additional presence in Lazio.
