E. De Stefani notes that this surname is of patronymic origin, derived from the given name Candido, coming from the Latin Candidus, which meant "pure, candid", and which over time became a surname. It is well attested in Socchieve and its frazioni —in particular Mediis and Dilignidis—, within the Carnia, a mountainous zone of the north of Friuli in the province of Udine, where it is documented from the beginning of the 17th century. It also presents high density in Domanins, a frazione of San Giorgio della Richinvelda.

E. Rossoni adds a hypothesis on the geographical origin of the surname: the first bearers could have come from the town of San Candido, in the Trentino-Alto Adige, a locality situated about thirty kilometres from the main zone of distribution of the surname. Rossoni records presence of the surname also in the Veneto —concretely in Santo Stefano di Cadore, in the Belluno area— and in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, both in San Giorgio della Richinvelda, in the Pordenone area, and in Varmo, in the Udine area.
