Surname Daidone
Origin and meaning
The authors agree that it is a typically Sicilian surname, of toponymic origin, derived from the name of the locality of Aidone, in the province of Enna, indicating the geographical provenance of the founder of the lineage.
F. Miranda notes that the surname is present in all the provinces of Sicily, with greater concentration in the Trapani, Catania, Syracuse and Enna areas, and with specific zones also in Lombardy, Lazio, Campania, Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna, Sardinia and Veneto. On the etymology of the place name Aidone, Miranda gathers several hypotheses: the legendary one traces it back to Aidoneus, another name of the god Hades-Pluto; the Arabic one links it to Ayn Dun, which would mean "upper water spring"; the Greek one relates it to αηδονί (aidoni), "nightingale"; and the Germanic one derives it from the personal name Aidon-onis.
E. Rossoni agrees on the toponymic origin referring to Aidone and on the interpretation of the surname as an indicator of the place of provenance of the founder of the lineage.
