Origin and meaning
The place name is very old, pre-Latin. Klapp/Krapp = rock, stone, and is found in the Milan area as ciapp, ciapèl, that is, fragment, terracotta; in the Ticino canton ciapa = stone, rock; in Friulian klapp and in the Canavese ciapera with the meaning of stony place. Crippa is a frazione of Sirtori. In the 1377 list of the Milanese noble houses, mentioned more than once, there is a Creppa family. In the list of the Nine Hundred of the Golden Ambrosian Republic only one de Creppa appears. The surname became quite well known later in Brianza.
According to E. De Felice: a surname frequent in Milan and in upper Lombardy, formed from the place name Crippa (in the province of Como).
