The authors agree that the surname derives from the place name Cogorno, a locality of the province of Genoa, in the region of Liguria. E. De Felice notes that the surname is frequent in Genoa and in the Ligurian Levante. E. Rossoni agrees with that distribution, although he broadens the area of presence to the Alessandria area, and specifies that the surname arose as a nickname linked to the mentioned place name before becoming a surname. P. Regati considers it typical of the locality of Cogorno itself.
