Chiapella is a surname that originates in the Cuneo area, in Piedmont. Its origin could lie in nicknames derived from the Germanic word klappa (trap) or from the Latin word clapare (to capture), both linked to the activity of hunting. Another possible derivation is the place name Chiappero, a frazione of the comune of Envie.

The addition of suffixes, very frequent in Italian surnames, gave rise to multiple variants, among them: Chiappero, Chiappella, Chiapella, Chiappelli, Chiappa, Chiappini, Chiappino, Chiapellino, Chiapperi and Chiapperino.

Some of these variants present well-defined geographical distributions in Italy:

• Chiappelli: typical of the Apennine area between Modena and Pistoia.
• Chiappa: very frequent in the province of Ancona.
• Chiappella: present in two main clusters, in Salerno and in Liguria.
• Chiappellini: characteristic of the Milanese area (Milan and surroundings).
• Chiapperi: a rare surname, with scattered presence in Genoa, Piacenza, Terni and Rome, but with a more consistent nucleus in the Bari area (Terlizzi, Bitonto and Molfetta).
• Chiapperino: practically exclusive to the same Bari area.
• Chiappero: prevalent in Piedmont, especially in the provinces of Turin and Cuneo.
• Chiappini: very common in central and northern Italy.
• Chiappino: specific to the province of Alessandria and nearby areas of Genoa, bearing in mind that historically some Ligurian comuni were assigned to Alessandria.

These variants reflect both the linguistic evolution of the surname and its adaptation to different regional contexts, showing how one same origin can give rise to multiple forms distributed throughout Italy.
