De Felice explains that the surname derives from the medieval hypocoristic Cénne or Cénni, an abbreviated form obtained by aphaeresis and syncope of the auspicious name Bencivenni (see Bencivenga). E. Rossoni agrees on the origin, describing it as a contracted aphaeretic form of the same medieval name Bencivenni.

As for the geographical distribution, De Felice places it mainly in Tuscany and Emilia, with sporadic presence in the Naples area. Rossoni specifies the areas of greatest concentration: Bologna, Ravenna, Forlì, Florence, Arezzo, Siena and Rome, which confirms and details the presence in Tuscany and Emilia noted by De Felice, also adding Rome as a point of rooting.
